Why Stay At Hotel Shangri-La
Thanks to a $30 million renovation, this Old Hollywood mainstay is chic once again, and guests can't get enough of the cabana-lined pool one block from the Pacific Ocean.
The Shangri-La—open since 1939—is a mid-century modern paradise. Design aficionados will appreciate the Art Deco façade, with curved edges and racing stripes, which was meticulously preserved during owner Tehmina Adaya's comprehensive 2009 renovation. Each of the 71 rooms and suites maintains the original style, while modern (and luxe) amenities include 50-inch flat-screen TVs, soft Frette robes, and eco-friendly bath products. But much of the hotel's history has to do with Hollywood lore: the property was commandeered as army barracks during WWII and as a community shelter in the 1960s. If the walls could talk, they'd tell tales of wild 1980s parties with guests from JFK Jr. to the Dalai Lama and, more recently, Madonna and Tom Cruise.
At The Dining Room, the hotel's upscale restaurant, ingredients are sourced from nearby foodie mecca the Santa Monica Farmers' Market. The menu changes seasonally, but signature dishes include goat cheese-stuffed dates and short-rib sliders.
Grab a glass of wine and relax on the wraparound deck, where you'll find jaw-dropping views of Santa Monica and the Pacific Ocean.
Arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is approximately 12 miles from the hotel. Anticipate about 20-60 minutes of travel time, depending on traffic.1301 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica, California, United States
