Why Stay At Las Brisas Ixtapa

A certain panache made the original Las Brisas an Acapulco icon. Now the same spirit can be discovered up the coast in laid-back Zihuatanejo, on a white-sand beach just outside Ixtapa.

The Scoop

Built into a hillside on a private cove and refreshed to the tune of $20 million in 2007, this seaside oasis lies just south—and yet worlds apart—from Ixtapa's strip of high-rise hotels, but it's still just a 10-minute taxi ride from either the nightlife and restaurants of Ixtapa or old Zihuatanejo. All 416 of the modern rooms have terrace hammocks to enjoy the superlative views over the hotel's private beach, a gorgeous swath of white sand buffeted by frequently rough surf—the reason most guests confine their swimming to the four cascading pools. If Elvis and Elizabeth Taylor were still around, this is the Las Brisas you'd find them visiting today.

Insider Tips

Stay in an adults-only Brisas Beach Club Room and you'll have access to a private 20th-floor lounge area, where a complimentary breakfast and an afternoon cocktail hour are offered.

Why We Love Ixtapa

A beautiful beach resort area with all the amenities a weary traveller desires and all accompanied by 340 days of sunshine.

Don't Miss

Best Day Trip: The warm, tropical waters off the Costa Grande are some of the most unspoiled along Mexico's Pacific coast. Zihua Aquadivers leads guided dives to 35 different sites including Morros de Potosí, a mini Galapagos about 40 minutes by boat from the bay. Calle Juan N. Álvarez #30-4. 011-52-755-544-6666
Dives from $55 per person.

Where to Shop: Alberto's, a family business that dates back to 1930, is known for its selection of exquisite modern and traditional silver jewelry pieces, many of them inlaid with opal and other precious stones.
Calle Cuauhtémoc 12 & 15. 011-52-755-554-2161

Where to Eat: It's hard to decide what's more memorable at Kau-Kan: the stingray in black butter sauce, mahimahi in pumpkin and pineapple sauce, or the view from the outdoor tables overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay.
Camino a Playa la Ropa, Playa la Madera, Zihuatanejo, Mexico. 011-755-554-8446.
Dinner for two $75.

Where to Drink: Il Mare, Costa Grande's best wine cellar, is perched on a hilltop above Zihuatanejo Bay. Snatch an outdoor table and peruse the extensive wine list (it spotlights bottles from the best wine regions, as well as homegrown Baja vintages) or cool off with a Bellini cocktail. Carretera Escenica a la Playa Ropa Beach, Zihuatanejo. 011-52-755-554-9067
Drinks for two $10.

Soaring above Ixtapa's tropical coast.
