Vuyani Safari Lodge
Moditlo Private Game Reserve, South AfricaEnter your email address and zip code for pricing and availability
Why Stay At Vuyani Safari Lodge
The five-room Vuyani lodge is the only property on South Africa's Moditlo Private Game Reserve, and the á la carte pricing means you select your activities and excursions—from hot-air balloon rides to elephant tracking—for a more affordable safari.
This rustic South African safari lodge stands out for its small size and intimacy. Consider the statistics: it's made up of only five rooms, an infinity pool, and a traditional boma hut for braais (grilled meat in Afrikaans). But what the lodge lacks in scale, it delivers in its surroundings. Set within the Moditlo Private Game Reserve, a 36,000-acre expanse at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, the location—reached by a one-hour flight from Johannesburg—is a gathering place for the Big Five: rhino, elephant, lion, cheetah, and leopard, plus more than 400 species of birds, including the rare ground hornbill. Guests participate in twice-daily game drives and can opt for additional excursions, from a flatboat cruise on the Olifants River to a hot-air balloon ride over the Drakensberg mountains. Bring a travel partner—many of the hotel's excursions have a two-person minimum. But an unusual perk is that the hotel allows travelers to pay á la carte. Those who prefer the all-inclusive option go on two game drives per day, while everyone sleeps in one of the five chalets, each furnished with canopied king-size beds and alfresco showers.
Pay special attention to the off-roading experience; unlike the excursions led by guides at properties located in nearby Kruger National Park, the lodge's safari jeeps are permitted to explore the entire Moditlo Private Game Reserve, which means that guests can spend more time observing the animals without another jeep in sight.
If time is of the essence, book one of the hotel's private jet transfers for the one-hour flight from Johannesburg's O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).
Arrive at Hoedspruit Airport (HDS), Nelspruit Airport (NLP) or Phalaborwa Airport (PHW). Transfers provided by Lodge personnel.Moditlo Private Game Reserve, Hoedspruit, Limpopo, South Africa

Why We Love Moditlo Private Game Reserve
South Africa's Moditlo Private Game Reserve is a 36,000-acre expanse at the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains, just south of Kruger National Park. The trump card? Incredible biodiversity.
$423 per person.
Outdoor Adventure: A two-story flatboat is the best way to see the park's water-based animals—from hippos to African crocodiles—that live in the Olifants River. For more dramatic landscapes, head to Blyde River Canyon; trained guides can point out the famous Three Rondavels rock formations and the 660-foot Kadishi Tufa waterfall.
Top Day Trips: Learn about the cultural traditions of the local Shangaan tribe on a half-day excursion to their village. For those more interested in wildlife conservation, hotel rangers will bring guests to a nearby cheetah rescue center or to a private elephant sanctuary, a 45-minute drive from the hotel.
