Why Stay At Sanbona Wildlife Preserve

Just three hours west of Cape Town, this luxury tented camp and lodge serves as home base for game spotting and ancient rock art in South Africa's lush Breede River Valley.

The Scoop

Cape 62 is a 200-mile scenic drive that starts in Cape Town and heads west to Little Karoo; it also serves as the entry to the 134,000-acre Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, a lush expanse in the Breede River Valley that's home to cluster of places to stay. The nine tents at Dykwa Tented Lodge are set in a dry river bend, near ancient San rock art; Gondwana Lodge is made up of 12 contemporary suites with floor-to-ceiling windows onto the Anysberg Mountains; and a more traditional Cape Georgian design scheme is on display in the six suites of the 1898 Tilney Manor. Authentic Karoo cuisine—such as smoked venison—are included in the rate, as are two game drives a day, for spotting the Big Five, plus springbok, ostrich, and riverine rabbit.

Insider Tips

Though rooms are plush, don't head back right after dinner. Guests can enjoy a glass of wine and listen as the resort's astronomical guides review the Southern Hemisphere's stars and constellations.

There's plenty of security to keep animals out, but only Gondwana Lodge is surrounded by an electric perimeter fence.

Preferred Airport

Arrive at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) which is approximately 115 miles from the reserve. Anticipate about 2 hours and 45 minutes of travel time.

Why We Love Little Karoo

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is set on 134,000 acres of wildlife-filled South African terrain. Ranger tours (by vehicle and on foot) go in search of elephant herds, cheetah, and the elusive white lion.

Don't Miss

Outdoor Excursions: Rangers lead hikes to see Devonian-era rock formations, which date back more than 400 million years. There are also seven ancient rock art sites and secluded rock pools, ideal for soaking.

Where to Eat: Chef Bernhard Hess helms the kitchen at the award-winning Mimosa Lodge in Montagu, just a five-minute drive from the resort. Don't miss the oven-roasted quail and tuna capriccio served with a wasabi cucumber salad.
