Portofino Beach Resort
Ambergris Caye, Belize
Why Stay At Portofino Beach Resort
Kick back on the white sandy beaches of Ambergris Caye. This 17-room resort is located right along the water, less than an hour boat ride from the legendary, 200-mile-long Belize Barrier Reef.
In 2001, Belgian owners Jan and Sandra Van Noord left their chilly homeland for Belize to establish the hotel on Ambergris Caye. Thatch-roofed beach cabanas and a selection of suites, including a honeymoon suite with a private Jacuzzi, make up the accommodations, and their interiors are decorated in mahogany wood and artwork from Belizean artists. Le Bistro, the resort's main restaurant, serves a Euro-Caribbean cuisine that includes dishes like Lobster à la Ritz (whiskey-flamb´ed lobster, shrimp, and linguini in a cream sauce) and lime-and-cilantro-marinated pork tenderloin served with grilled pineapple.
If you find yourself bellied up to the resort's Green Parrot Bar, be sure to keep an eye out for Orville, the main bartender. His friendly personality endears him to many guests—not to mention he mixes a mean margarita.
The resort's water taxi service is free, but it only runs to San Pedro sporadically—two to four times per day. If you want to hit town on your own, plan to spend about $20 per person roundtrip on one of the public water taxis (credit cards accepted).
Arrive at San Pedro Airstrip (SPR) which is approximately 7 miles from the resort. Anticipate about 15-20 minutes of travel time by boat.6 Miles North, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize

Why We Love Ambergris Caye
Rent a golf cart and roam the dusty, pavement-free roads of this former fishing village. For a more metropolitan experience, Belize City is a 20-minute water taxi ride away.
Where to Eat: Hop on a water taxi and head to Rendezvous Restaurant & Winery, located three miles north of the resort. The kitchen's Thai and French dishes, which include pork tenderloin with a Dijon and caper demi-glace or pad thai with sautéed shrimp, pair well with the house-made wines.
Dinner for two $65.
Where to Drink: Rojo Beach Bar Lounge has all the expected amenities—sea views, tropical tunes, and a dog or two lying about in the shade, but it also treats the drinks as more than an afterthought; all cocktails are handcrafted with natural ingredients and handmade juices and syrups.
North Beach, San Pedro.
Best Day Trip: Explore the spectacular ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Lamanai. This excursion launches from the resort by boat at 6:45 a.m. and sails through the mainland via the Northern River to the village of Bomba.
$135 per person, including roundtrip transfers, guided tour, park entrance fees, refreshments, breakfast, and lunch.
